A lifelong Trojan, Carmella was born in the North Central, before her family moved to Lansingburgh where she attended high school. Professionally, Carmella has worked for governors, from both parties, as the Executive Director of the Hudson Valley Greenway and NYS Canal Corporation. While her career in public service took her to communities throughout the state, Carmella has never left Troy. Today, Carmella and her husband of 30 years Paul Laviano live in Sycaway and are the proud parents of two boys Pauly and James.
As the proud daughter of a decorated Troy Police detective, Carmella has always had a deep appreciation for the importance of public safety and an abiding respect for the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. “Public safety is the first and most important responsibility of the government and as Mayor, I will work day and night to ensure that our police and fire have the personnel and the resources to get the job done,” Carmella says.
Over the past 8 years, Carmella has served as the City Council President. In that role, she brought back checks and balances to the Council, serving as an independent voice who refused to just be a rubber stamp to the mayor’s office.
“As City Council President, I have been an independent voice that always put the needs of the people ahead of politics. As Mayor, I pledge to do the same,” Carmella says.
Putting people ahead of politics is how Mantello was able to accomplish so much working with the administration including initiatives like $40 million water transmission line, the sea wall, South Troy pool, park funds, executing ARPA funds, fiscally responsibility to lift the MAC debt, Knickerbacker and South Troy pools, 6 more police officers and more.
Carmella believes that “Troy is on the verge of an amazing rebirth. Together, with the right leadership in City Hall, we can make it one of those places that people want to live in upstate New York, not run away from. Safer, cleaner neighborhood, and a more vibrant and affordable City. That is what the people of Troy deserve and that is the leadership I promise to deliver.”
